Chemistry Teaching Jobs

Southern Teachers Agency has quite a few chemistry and physical science job listings from schools for the 2013-14 academic year.  These jobs range from physical science at the middle-school level through high school AP Chemistry.  It is common for science teachers to teach more than one kind of science, so some of these positions will require a chemistry teacher to lead sections of biology, physics, or another science. If you know of students who are interested in teaching science after they graduate, please consider forwarding this information to them.

STA is the oldest teacher-placement service in America.  We receive job listings from hundreds of PK-12 private schools around the South.  Schools come to STA because they recognize the value of STA’s help in recruiting & screening talented candidates. 

Certification is not required by private schools for many science teaching jobs.


Requirements: 

For most of these chemistry teaching jobs, a bachelor’s degree with a major in chemistry (or at the very least a chemistry minor) is essential, but teacher certification is not.  Of course, a degree in science education is highly desirable, as is a master’s degree in chemistry.  Candidates should have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.  Some of these positions require prior teaching experience.

Atlanta Urban Teacher Residency Program for Math and Science Students

If your students have ever thought about making a difference and are passionate about urban youth, the Atlanta Urban Teacher Residency (AUTR) may be the program for them. AUTR will prepare individuials to teach in Atlanta Public Schools to impact the lives of children in the city of Atlanta. As a resident in the AUTR cohort selected individuals will participate in an intense program focused on recruiting, preparing and retaining secondary mathematics and science teachers in Atlanta Public Schools.

Our mission is to create a pipeline of highly effective secondary teachers in the Atlanta Public School's areas of greatest need - math, science, reading, and special education - through an Urban Teacher Residency.

As APS seeks to ensure that there is an effective teacher in every classroom, AUTR will prepare an elite cadre of teachers to go into high needs schools. AUTR has identified master teachers to train and support residents as they earn their master's degree and develop their skills as highly effective classroom teachers.

The Atlanta Urban Teacher Residency focuses on innovative mathematics and science teaching and learning in middle and high schools. The Urban Teacher Residency (UTR) model is similar to the medical residency program model. AUTR is a member of a network of UTR programs across the country. Our program is designed to recruit teachers for high need positions and give them a strong year of "on the job" training and support followed by intense post-residency support.

Knowles Fellowships

We are pleased to inform you that the Knowles Science Teaching Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2013 cohort of Science and Mathematics Teaching Fellows. The Knowles Science Teaching Foundation (KSTF) was created by Janet H. and C. Harry Knowles in 1999 to cultivate and support exemplary science and mathematics high school teachers and develop the next generation of leaders in education. If you know a student interested in pursuing a career in teaching mathematics or science at the high school level, please let them know about the KSTF Teaching Fellowship.

KSTF’s programs are designed to help reverse the current national trend that sees approximately half of all secondary teachers leave the field within five years. The total award for each Fellow is valued at nearly $175,000 over the course of the five-year Fellowship. Fellows receive tuition assistance while participating in a teacher credential program, monthly stipends, and grants for professional development and teaching materials. By empowering science and mathematics teachers to be effective in the classroom, KSTF helps deliver enriched educational experiences to students and, in the long run, ensures a stronger, healthier and more competitive nation.

KSU/GT Science Night - MA Teaching scholarship

Students and alumni who are interested in becoming Chemistry, Physics, or Biology teachers are encouraged to come to the KSU/GT Science Night on Tuesday, Nov. 8th, at 6:30 p.m. (Clough Bldg, room 205, Undergrad Studies Suite).

Attendees will meet with faculty and MAT students in the Kennesaw State Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) programs in Science. This program will also highlight the Noyce Scholars Programs--a partnership between Georgia Tech and KSU--which provides scholarships worth from $10,000-$20,000, as well as professional development opportunities. There is also a new scholarship program for STEM career changers (perfect for alumni and/or some graduate students) that is worth a total of $50,000 and includes intensive mentoring.

Interested in K-12 teaching?

On Tuesday, Oct. 25th, we will have an Information Session on the Georgia State graduate program in science education and two great funding opportunities for future science teachers. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Clough Bldg, room 205 (Undergrad Studies, by the information desk and Starbucks). This will be casual and conversational. Everyone is welcome!

GSU students--some of whom are Tech alumni--and faculty from the graduate-level Science Education department will be at Tech to talk about the programs and share their experiences as they transition to teaching science (Broad Field, Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Space, or Physics).

The evening will highlight the I-MAST Scholars Program (Impacting Metro-Atlanta Science Teaching). This NSF-funded program is a GT/GSU partnership to support Tech students and alumni who want to become science educators (grades 6-12). The scholarship is worth between $12,000-$24,000. Tech students are eligible to receive the scholarship during their senior year (at Tech) and also during their MAT year (at GSU), or just for the MAT year. In addition to funding, the I-MAST also provides a professional learning community, support during the first years of teaching, and opportunities to attend and present at conferences.

And we will also have a presentation on the Knowles Science Teaching Fellowship (KSTF). The KSTF is a nationally-prestigious fellowship for people with STEM degrees who choose to become passionate teacher leaders in Biology, the Physical Sciences, or Math. The 5-year fellowship is worth approximately $150,000. One of the 2011 KSTF Biology Fellows is from Georgia and currently in the MAT at GSU. She will talk about the application process, the KSTF program and benefits, and be able to share her path from a BS in Biology to starting her teaching career. This is a great way to really learn about the program and get first-hand advice on preparing and applying for it. NOTE: KSTF funding can be used to support any teacher certification program, including alternative certification options-- it is not tied to GSU. See http://www.kstf.org/.

HS teaching fellowships - Knowles Science Teaching Foundation (KSTF)

Abstracts Each year, KSTF awards Teaching Fellowships to exceptional young men and women committed to teaching science and mathematics in United States high schools. They believe the commitment to teaching merits the deepest respect and support. Their Teaching Fellowship is designed explicitly to meet the needs of teachers from the time they begin working on a teaching credential through the early years of their career.

KSTF recognize that learning to teach is a life-long process, with critical benchmarks and challenges along the way. The first few years of teaching are particularly difficult. Faced with a sense of professional isolation, lack of support and mentoring, and the perception that teaching is a second-rate profession, approximately half of all secondary teachers in the United States leave the profession within five years.

KSTF Teaching Fellowships are awarded based on four selection criteria: science or mathematics content knowledge, commitment to teaching, professional ability and leadership.

Science or Mathematics Content Knowledge
A KSTF Teaching Fellow is expected to have exceptional content knowledge in science or mathematics. By the time the fellowship is awarded, the Fellow will have earned at least a bachelor's degree in science, mathematics or a discipline related to the subject(s) they intend to teach. In addition, KSTF considers grades in science and/or mathematics courses, the selection (depth and breadth) of coursework, participation in research, teaching experience in that discipline and awards and honors in the discipline as indicators of a Fellow's content knowledge. A Teaching Fellow is also able to participate in an informed discussion about his/her discipline and the specific content that he/she plans to teach, both with experts in the field as well as lay persons.

Commitment to Teaching
Teaching Fellows can articulate meaningful reasons for choosing high school science or mathematics teaching and have realistic ideas about and respect for the work of teachers. They recognize that teaching is complex and that learning to teach takes significant time and effort. Teaching Fellows have gained satisfaction and insight from working with children and have a clear rationale for choosing to work with adolescents in high school.

Professional Ability
Teaching Fellows understand the need for and have begun to develop the skills critical for teaching, such as the ability to plan and be flexible, to deal with failure and learn from new situations, to deal with diverse individuals and to transform knowledge into forms available to students. They have demonstrated a mastery of written and oral communication and have shown commitment and achievement in a variety of areas. Furthermore, Fellows have developed a habit of being reflective and recognize that reflective practice is critical to becoming an outstanding professional teacher.

Leadership
Teaching Fellows have the potential to become the leaders and change agents in education. They have demonstrated their potential as leaders through previous leadership roles, including positions of accountability, instances of demonstrated initiative and the ability to be a team player. Fellows also display leadership in their manner of personal interactions, exhibiting evidence of responsibility and maturity, as well as ethical and professional behavior.
Eligibility KSTF Science and Mathematics Teaching Fellows are chosen from among individuals who have earned or are in the process of earning a degree in science, mathematics or engineering from a recognized institution of higher education. Fellowships are offered for individuals committed to teaching high school mathematics, physical sciences or biological sciences.

Applicants should have received their most recent content (i.e., science, mathematics or engineering) degree within five years of the start of the fellowship (June 1 of the application year.) An individual who is in the final year of an undergraduate, master's, combined BS with MAT or MEd program or near the completion of a doctoral program in a content area may also be eligible. Applicants who have earned a content degree within the last five years and are currently enrolled in a secondary teaching credential program at the time of application, or have completed their secondary credential no earlier than the fall term before the application deadline, are also eligible to apply.

Applicants must be enrolled or plan to enroll in a recognized teacher education program that leads to a secondary science or mathematics teaching license. At the time of application, applicants do not need to be admitted into a teacher education program. However, successful applicants must be admitted into such a program before the fellowships are awarded in June.

New teachers who are not yet certified, but are working on coursework leading to a teaching license, are eligible to apply. KSTF offers up to two years of tuition assistance for coursework leading to certification, even for teachers who are studying part-time. However, only full-time students receive a monthly stipend.

Certified math or science teachers are not eligible for KSTF Teaching Fellowships, even if the certification is for other subjects or grade levels.

Applicants should be committed to teaching for at least five years.

Individuals who are not citizens or who hold degrees from outside the United States are eligible for the Teaching Fellowship. However, they must be committed to teaching science or mathematics in U.S. high schools.

MATCH Teacher Residency: An Opportunity for Your Students

I hope you’ll indulge a short, out-of-the-blue email. I'm the Recruitment Manager of the most selective teacher prep program in the nation (even more so than Teach for America). The program is called MATCH Teacher Residency, and it’s located in Boston. Basically, we give recent college graduates one year of incredibly intense training designed to make them unusually effective rookie teachers. We then help them find positions in high-need schools, and continue to support them as they begin their careers in the classroom.

GT/GSU Impacting Metro-Atlanta Science Teaching (I-MAST)

The GT/GSU Impacting Metro-Atlanta Science Teaching (I-MAST) program is offering an Info Session this week:

This program is for Tech undergrads, alumni, and graduate students who want to become science teachers (grades 6-12) and who want to earn their master's degree and teacher certification through Georgia State's MAT in Science. Tech undergrads who are rising seniors are eligible for scholarships of up to $24,000 ($12,000 during their senior year at Tech, and another $12,000 during their 1 year in the MAT program at GSU). Students who apply for the I-MAST at the time they begin the MAT are eligible for one year of funding ($12,000). I-MAST scholars are highly recruited by several metro-area school districts. Majors in the sciences and engineering are eligible to apply.

The deadline to apply for funding beginning this Fall is February 16. Information about the program, funding, and application process will be covered at the Info Session. Education 2.0: Leveraging Collaborative Tools for Teaching

On March 25, 2010 I presented at the Drexel E-Learning 2.0 Conference on "Education 2.0: Leveraging Collaborative Tools for Teaching". It was an opportunity to update my slides with what I did and learned from the Chemical Information Retrieval course I taught over the Fall 2009 term.

I described using a wiki to organize course content and to allow students to contribute useful resources. Their assignments were also designed to be useful to other students in the class as well as to the general library and chemistry community.

I covered using wikis and other collaborative tools to mentor students doing laboratory research with Open Notebook Science. At the end I provided a quick overview of using games and Second Life for educational purposes.

We're Gonna Ugi All Night!

Thus begins the CHEM254 lab manual for the week of April 7, 2008 at Dominican University:
“Ugi to the left, Ugi to the right. This is so fun, we’re gonna Ugi all night.”
As I discussed a few days ago, Brent has followed through in a big way in incorporating the UsefulChem project into his teaching lab:
This experiment represents the beginning of collaboration with the UsefulChem Bradley open notebook science group of graduate and undergraduate research at Drexel University. The goal of the UsefulChem project is to use the Ugi 4 component reaction to synthesize possible anti-malarial compounds. Open notebook science allows immediate dissemination of experimental results that invites advice and suggestions as well as complementary experiments that enhance and advance the project. We are going to reproduce some of the Drexel results as well as perform two complementary reactions that have not been done at Drexel.
The procedure is derived from our lab notebook with one interesting vortexing modification :)
Part I.
Add 0.33 g of your aldehyde to 8 mL methanol in a 20 mL scintillation vial.
Screw on a Teflon (green) cap on the vial. Vortex to mix and dissolve the aldehyde.
Add 1 mL of methylamine solution to the vial.
Vortex to mix. Sing the “Ugi song” while vortexing.
Obtain 0.34 g of the carboxylic acid. Add the carboxylic acid to the vial.
Vortex to mix.
Obtain 0.39 g of tosylmethylisocyanide. Add the tosylmethylisocyanide to the vial.
Vortex to mix.
Take a photo of your reaction mixture.
Label the vial and let the reaction mixture sit in the sealed vial.
By taking pictures his students can directly compare the progress of the reaction with our group. The questions for this lab are also excellent and may result in some useful ideas for my students to ponder (this may end up being a realistic way to foster chemistry crowdsourcing):
What could you do to isolate your product if after 7 days if there are no spontaneously formed crystals?

Refer to UsefulChem Experiment 171 . Which reaction most closely corresponds to our experiment? What were the results?

Consider the IR spectrum may reveal that there is unreacted isocyanide in your product mixture. Where does the isonitrile group appear in an IR spectrum? (Refer to appendix 2B in your textbook.)

Consider the possible 1H spectrum of your Ugi product. How many aromatic Hydrogens are there? How many methyl groups are there? Where would you expect to observe the methyl groups?

Consider the possible 13C spectrum of your Ugi product. How many aromatic Carbons are there? How many carbonyl carbons are there? How many methyl carbons are there? Where would you expect to observe the methyl carbons?

If you were given four different compounds for each type of Ugi reactant (16 compounds in all), how many different Ugi products could you attempt to make?

Since Brent and I started the discussion we have a few more precipitates involving the non-stinky tosylmethylisocyanide that may be suitable for his lab. Khalid has been doing some tedious but very necessary data checking and recording and the updated results are available on the Master Table of Ugi reactions.

There are currently 65 reactions, with 20 giving precipitates - and we are now including reactions where the starting materials fail to dissolve. Not all the precipitates have been characterized but they will be over time. In fact the Ugi product that Brent is trying to make in his lab for next week has not yet been fully characterized - all those phenolic groups seem to give rise to solubility issues in CDCl3.
