SpaceUp Atlanta - Where “Space is Peachy"

GT Student Hospital Connections General Orientation- Thursday, August 22nd @ 7pm!

To current and prospective Pre-Health students alike: do you want exposure to the field of medicine but don't know how to get started? How about weekly shuttle rides to local hospitals or opportunities to meet with medical professionals?

GT Student Hospital Connections offers all that and more! A student-run Pre-Med organization, GT SHC sets up volunteering opportunities at Grady Memorial Hospital and Atlanta Medical Center. Interviews and orientations are conducted on campus and weekly transportation is provided for those who require it. Not only do we provide medical exposure, but also offer further opportunities to explore the field with guest speakers, chance to interact with other Pre-Health students, and more!

1. General orientation will take place in Klaus 1456 at 7:00pm on Thursday, August 22nd. The orientation is open to anyone who wants to learn about GT SHC. We strongly encourage attending the orientation to anyone who plans to volunteer through SHC for the first time.
2. Online membership application will be posted at the GT SHC site ( http://gtshc.weebly.com/) at 5pm on Wednesday, August 21st. Application is due by 11:59 p.m. August 23rd.
3. Accepted members will be notified by 5pm on Sunday, August 25th regarding on-campus interviews with the volunteering directors from Grady Memorial Hospital and Atlanta Medical Center.

Elliott Churchill retired from the Division of International Health within the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). From the 1970s to 2006 when she retired, Ms. Churchill served in a number of positions, including as Manager for the CDC Publication Office, which was responsible for issuing the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) and other publications.

Study Abroad: BEST Program in Lyon, France

Study Abroad: Pacific Program

The Pacific Program Study Abroad Program is a 3 month, 12 week faculty-led study abroad to Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji which takes place in the Spring. Students are able to take courses in Biology(BIOL 1520, BIOL electives), Mechanical Engineering(COE 3001- Mechanics of Deformable Bodies), Material Science, Health, History, Philosophy, and even ethics.

A typical semester includes 6 weeks in New Zealand(classes in the capitol, Wellington, New Zealand, 4 weeks in Australia (Sydney, Brisbane, and a week on the Great Barrier Reef), and 2 weeks in Fiji.

Not only are the locations great, but every weekend is a 3-day weekend which gives you plenty of time to travel.

We are inviting you to SpaceUp Atlanta during World Space Week on Saturday Oct. 6th!

SpaceUp Atlanta is a space unconference, where participants decide the topics, schedule, and structure of the event. Unconferences have been held about technology, science, transit, and even cupcakes, but this is the first one focused on space exploration, science, STEM and anything about space.

Everyone who attends SpaceUp is encouraged to give a talk, moderate a panel, or start a discussion. You will be amazed at what comes out of SpaceUp. We hope to gather students, teachers, space professionals, and enthusiasts in the greater Atlanta region to foster a grassroots space community.

1. Volunteer applications are now posted on the GT SHC site (

Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. August 24th. Applications are

required for both new and returning members.

2. General orientation will be on August 30th at 7:00 p.m in Boggs B6.

3. Be sure to come early as there are limited spots available for

members needing transportation from us. Please line up outside the door

in order of your arrival. We will still accept those people who have

their own means of transportation to the hospitals.

4. Dues for Grady will be $25 (for those needing shuttle rides) and

$15 (for those providing their own transportation.) Dues for AMC will

be $50 (for those needing shuttle rides) and $30 (for those providing

their own transportation.)

5. Grady volunteering is a one-semester commitment, whereas AMC

volunteering is a two-semester commitment. Please take this into

consideration when you sign up.

History of Rock and Shakespeare Classes Offered (Humanities)

There are still plenty of seats in LCC classes with the humanities attribute.  Two classes that might especially interest are Dr. Phil Auslander's History of Rock (LCC 3863 LS - Special Topics in Performance--see description below), and Dr. Robert Wood's course on Shakespeare (LCC 3228 LS - Shakespeare).  The prereq for both classes is ENGL 1102.  Register now, since these classes are not regularly available in fall and spring.

LCC 3863 L - Special Topics in Performance (History of Rock)

Course Description: Section: LS. We will look at the first half of the development of rock music (roughly from World War II to 1970) examined both diachronically and synchronically from historical, social, musical, and performance perspectives. Areas of focus will include: • the evolution of the rock band from earlier configurations of musicians beginning with big bands; • the evolution of the vocal harmony group from gospel through doo wop to the Beach Boys and the Mamas and the Papas; • the waxing and waning of theatricality in the performance of rock music; • the changing social identities and roles of musicians and audiences; • the role of media, including sound recordings, radio, and television, in the evolution and dissemination of rock music; • specific musical genres, including jump blues, blues, rockabilly, rock n roll, rock, and psychedelic rock. The conduct of the course will combine lecture and discussion. Requirements will include readings and preparation, participation in discussion, exams, and a major writing assignment or project. If you are interested in thinking about rock music and its history in serious and analytical ways (while also having some fun) this is the course for you!

Charged Magazine Meeting-April 11th

Do you feel like the real world (or at least Georgia Tech) is stifling your creativity?  Do you love science and math but just can't seem to get EXCITED about them any more?  Do you trudge through your work/school day wishing your classes and research were at least as interesting as checking Facebook?  Why not introduce your inner rock star to your inner science geek and have fun with what you do?
  
CHARGEDMAGAZINE.ORG is an edgy, snarky, silly online magazine about how science and studying science (and math and engineering) affects people.  We are currently seeking students, faculty, and staff (and non-GT people!) who are interested in writing for Charged Magazine or contributing in other ways over the summer and in the 2012-2013 academic year.

New Organization: Society of Engineers for Environmental Development (SEED)

In today's world, global warming has become the topic of concerned discourse amongst the scientific community. Moreover, being one of the world’s most prestigious institution for research and development, Georgia Institute of Technology has been successfully turning heads towards the advancement of human evolution for the past decade. As an institute that cherishes and nurtures the principles of intellectual thought, engineering, and problem solving, we as students believe that it is our duty nay our obligation to use the knowledge bestowed upon us by this esteemed academy. Since its inception in 1885, Georgia Institute of Technology has been sincerely committed towards establishing a multicultural heritage centralizing around the idea of progress and service for the greater good. The evolution of this ideology over time, has brought upon us a set of exclusive and powerful ethics that accentuate us on the globe. Inherently, these ethics have awakened a sense of responsibility and obligation in us, towards protecting our soil together for not only us but also for generations of civilizations to come forth.

As an integral participant in this cycle, SEED as an organization is determined and dedicated to gather young, diverse, and exceptional minds, cultivate and unleash their potential to not only make an impact but leave a blueprint on this planet to lead a legacy for many decades and centuries to come.
