The American Chemical Society (ACS) offers renewable scholarships to underrepresented minority students who want to enter chemistry or related fields. Awards of up to $5,000 are given to qualified African American, Hispanic or American Indian students who are high school seniors or college freshman, sophomores, or juniors pursuing a college degree in the chemical sciences. SCI Scholars--Summer 2014 Internships for Undergraduates

We are pleased to announce the fifth year of the summer internship program, SCI Scholars, for chemistry and chemical engineering undergraduates.
The program is a joint effort of the Society of Chemical Industry (SCI) America International Group, the American Chemical Society (ACS), and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), and was developed to introduce chemistry and chemical engineering students to careers in the chemical industry.
Exceptional sophomores and juniors with a GPA of at least 3.5 and who are majoring in chemistry or chemical engineering are encouraged to apply.

Program details:

• Thirty-five scholars will be chosen for internship positions in the summer of 2014.
• SCI Scholars receive $6,000-$10,000+ for a ten-week internship.
• Students will be awarded a certificate and an additional $1,000, which can be used for any purpose, such as participation at an ACS or AIChE meeting.
• Scholars nominate a high school chemistry teacher for recognition. Teachers will be awarded a certificate from SCI and $1,000, which can be used for professional development or classroom materials.
• Applications are due December 14, 2013.

The Thermo Scientific Pierce Scholarship Program for the Fall 2013 semester includes two (2) $10,000 scholarships and four (4) $5,000 scholarships, to be awarded to undergraduate and graduate students with a declared major of biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or a related life-science field. To qualify for the scholarship, students must have a GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) and be enrolled in an accredited college for university for the Winter/Spring 2013 semester. In addition to these qualifications, students must also be legal United States residents, meaning that students possessing appropriate Visa status in order to study in the United States are also eligible. 

Students may apply for the scholarship through the Thermomo Scientific Pierce Scholarship Website. Applications will be accepted until July 31, 2013.  We strongly encourage all students that meet the scholarship award criteria to apply for this great scholarship!

My name is Kathryn Meehan, and I direct the GT Fellowships Office. The $10,000 Astronaut Scholarship is for STEM majors in any field except for pre-med who are engaged in research (see additional eligibility information below). Please read the following information very carefully.

The Astronaut Scholarship deadlines are coming soon, but the most important thing to do first is to determine if you're eligible, decide whether you want to apply, and to request your two recommendation letters by this Monday, Feb. 11th or before. You can forward information from this email to your recommenders, along with your resume and any supplementary information you might want to share regarding your work and activities. Astronaut Scholarship Information

The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation’s (ASF) award is for outstanding students who exhibit motivation, imagination, and exceptional performance in the fields of engineering, mathematics and natural or applied sciences at one of the twenty-seven schools with which the Foundation has agreements. The award is for $10,000.

Students nominated for Astronaut Scholarship should be highly motivated, focused in their academic objectives and possess intellectual daring. ASF recognizes that these special students may be so involved, they excel in science, mathematics and engineering although they may be somewhat less successful in general studies courses. Students should be nominated by a professor at their institution who knows the student very well.

Although we wish to make it clear that the award will be made primarily on the basis of merit, financial need may be considered.

Nominee Requirements/Eligibility:

• Be a U.S. citizen (birth certificate, U.S. passport or naturalization papers required).

• Be a junior or senior at the time the scholarship begins.

• Have completed two years of full-time study at the ASF-supported/nominating school.

• Major in Natural or Applied Science, Engineering or Mathematics (biomedical research students are eligible, however, pre-med are not).

• Maintain full-time student status during both terms of the ASF-supported academic year.

• Have conducted a considerable amount of research in their specific field.

Submission Guidelines:

• The nominating faculty member should, at a minimum, complete the scholarship nomination form with assistance from the nominee.

• Two nomination letters from faculty members (one from the nominating professor) at the student’s institution must be submitted to the Foundation, including details on research achievements/endeavors.

• Students must submit a short not to exceed one pagee of 12 point type, statement of personal interests, activities, hobbies and goals. The narrative letter supporting the nomination form should give examples of the involvement and commitment of the student to their studies beyond the formal classroom setting as shown on the transcript. Creativity is an important attribute to document.

• An official transcript must be submitted.

• Students must submit a current, personal resume.

• Completed nominations should be submitted to the Astronaut Scholarship liaison, Dr. Kathryn Meehan, by 5:00 pm on February 25^th, 2013. (See earlier required deadlines above.)

UNCF/Merck Science Initiative Scholarships

We are pleased to announce the 2013 competition for the UNCF/Merck Science Initiative
Research Scholarships and Fellowships. Each scholarship/fellowship can be from $30,000 to
$92,000. This continues the initiative which began in 1996 in support of science education and is
sponsored by The Merck Company Foundation and Merck and administered by UNCF. This
commitment has been renewed through 2015.

The UNCF/Merck Science Initiative is dedicated to supporting the training of world-class African
American biological and chemical scientists and engineers toward achieving the complementary
goals of national economic competitiveness and social diversity. This initiative provides scholarships
and fellowships to at least 37 outstanding African American students per year- 15 at the

REU Program: Northwestern University

The Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) at Northwestern University offers a 9-week paid summer Research Experience for Undergraduates program. Research areas include ceramics, polymers, nanoparticles, photonics, molecular electronics and biomaterials.  

While there are many REU programs, the NU-MRSEC stands out in offering students an interdisciplinary research experience.  This opportunity is open to all physics, chemistry, engineering and materials science students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The program dates this year are June 24 to August 23, 2013;

The Master of Arts in Teaching degree leads to a master’s degree as well as teacher certification in the state of Georgia. Programs include:

· Grades K -12: English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)/Reading, Language and Literacy

I-IMPACT Noyce II Fellowships provide annual $10K stipends

Georgia Tech partners with Kennesaw State University in supporting the Noyce Scholarships funded by the National Science Foundation. The I-IMPACT Noyce II Fellowships provide annual $10K stipends over 5 years (total of $50K) as well as other funding to each recipient. The first program year is spent in the Kennesaw State University's Master of Arts (MAT) in Teaching Science degree and the next four are spent teaching in a high needs school district in Georgia. These scholarships are available to students who are in their final year at Tech, majoring in a science, engineering or technology field, and are considering becoming a middle or high school physics or chemistry teacher in Georgia.

You are invited to attend a reception and information session about the MAT and I-IMAST fellowship programs on Wednesday, September 5^th in the ATOMS Center, House 59 on the Kennesaw campus. The two session options are: 5:30-6:30pm or 6:30-7:30pm. A light dinner and refreshments will be served at both sessions.
