2013 KSTF Teaching Fellowships - seeking applicants

We are pleased to inform you that the Knowles Science Teaching Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2013 cohort of Science and Mathematics Teaching Fellows. The Knowles Science Teaching Foundation (KSTF) was created by Janet H. and C. Harry Knowles in 1999 to cultivate and support exemplary science and mathematics high school teachers and develop the next generation of leaders in education. If you know a student interested in pursuing a career in teaching mathematics or science at the high school level, please let them know about the KSTF Teaching Fellowship.

KSTF’s programs are designed to help reverse the current national trend that sees approximately half of all secondary teachers leave the field within five years. The total award for each Fellow is valued at nearly $175,000 over the course of the five-year Fellowship. Fellows receive tuition assistance while participating in a teacher credential program, monthly stipends, and grants for professional development and teaching materials. By empowering science and mathematics teachers to be effective in the classroom, KSTF helps deliver enriched educational experiences to students and, in the long run, ensures a stronger, healthier and more competitive nation.

Co-op position in Polymer/Material Science at Bose Corporation - 2012

Polymer/Material Science co-op position for a sophomore or junior college student majoring in material science or chemistry with a strong academic record (GPA of at least 3.0), is available in the Center for Materials Science at Bose Corporation for six months in 2012.

A successful candidate should have prior laboratory research experience (industrial internship or undergraduate research program) in material science, polymer science or related fields. The candidate should be self-motivated, excited to explore new technologies and to perform hands-on laboratory research. Knowledge of polymer materials, composites and processing techniques, and understanding the relationship between chemical structure and mechanical property is highly desirable.

The appointment will be for 40 hours per week, and compensation will be commensurate with education and experience.

Location:

Bose Corporate Headquarters, located west of Boston in Framingham, MA. It is about a 35 minute drive from downtown Boston, just off the Massachusetts Turnpike. No public transportation is available, so the co-op student must have reliable transportation to our facilities.

Co-Op Position in Biomaterials (CIBA Vision/Novartis)

Applications are invited from exceptionally talented co-op candidates to assist in cutting edge research in the area of Biomaterial Sciences at Ciba Vision (a Novartis Company) R&D Center in Johns Creek, Atlanta, GA. The initial assignment is for one co-op term, which may be extended up to 2-3 years, depending on performance, projects, and other factors.

Scope of Work:

• The selected candidate is expected to assist in the research and development of biomaterials for applications in contact lens industry. The scope includes: carrying out literature search, performing experiments involving biomaterials, developing and performing analytical tests, analyzing experimental data, preparing reports and presentation materials, and optionally developing mathematical models to simulate medical devices or specific attributes of the same.

• Due to the multidisciplinary nature of the projects, the candidate is expected to work with employees from various disciplines including chemistry, process, engineering, analytical, regulatory, etc. Having good interpersonal skills will be very helpful.

• This role requires one to learn new techniques, methods and processes. Ability to quickly learn and adapt to the changing pace of the project will be very valuable.

• As opportunities arise, the candidate may have the opportunity to partake in collaborative projects with external agencies including universities and consultants.

Education Requirements:

• Preferably, the candidate is enrolled in the second year full-time Undergraduate degree program in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science, or other related disciplines, in an accredited institution. Candidates with excellent grades will be given preference.
• Good fundamental knowledge in chemistry, mathematics, and physics is required.

Experience Requirements:

• Experience in Lab, R&D setting will be beneficial.
• However, prior industrial experience is not a prerequisite.

This position is a Research and Development position. Coops will be responsible for leading small projects, working under the technical guidance and mentorship of the R&D team. New openings due to increased contract and internal Research and Development awards for anthropomorphic medical training devices. KGS recently won awards for Best US Army Modeling and Simulation Project and US Army Technical Achievement Award. KGS is a wholly owned subsidiary of Kforce which has annual revenue of $1billion annually. Projects encompass requirements and prototype training aid development including analysis, design, human factors design/test, development of Zigbee electronic control and data collection system. Under guidance of the senior engineering staff, the students will be assigned to teams associated with ongoing prototyping programs.
Duties may include:

• Requirements analysis and development for current and future medical training aid products including robotics, silicon molding techniques and human factors engineering.
• Preparation and modification of engineering drawings and electrical wiring diagrams
• Hands-on prototype development of future training aids including materials selection, design, prototype construction using molding techniques, and development of Zigbee control/data-collection subsystem.
• Collaboration with practical special effects artisans to develop appropriate training features and to streamline manufacturing processes and techniques.
• Collaboration with practical special effects artisans to improve production quality control.
• Development and test of Zigbee prototype software
• Development of inorganic/organic chemistries to mimic blood coagulation

Strong written, verbal, analytical, and interpersonal skills required. Must display maturity and a high level of professionalism. Strong computer skills desired.
