GT Student Hospital Connections General Orientation- Thursday, August 22nd @ 7pm!

To current and prospective Pre-Health students alike: do you want exposure to the field of medicine but don't know how to get started? How about weekly shuttle rides to local hospitals or opportunities to meet with medical professionals?

GT Student Hospital Connections offers all that and more! A student-run Pre-Med organization, GT SHC sets up volunteering opportunities at Grady Memorial Hospital and Atlanta Medical Center. Interviews and orientations are conducted on campus and weekly transportation is provided for those who require it. Not only do we provide medical exposure, but also offer further opportunities to explore the field with guest speakers, chance to interact with other Pre-Health students, and more!

1. General orientation will take place in Klaus 1456 at 7:00pm on Thursday, August 22nd. The orientation is open to anyone who wants to learn about GT SHC. We strongly encourage attending the orientation to anyone who plans to volunteer through SHC for the first time.
2. Online membership application will be posted at the GT SHC site ( http://gtshc.weebly.com/) at 5pm on Wednesday, August 21st. Application is due by 11:59 p.m. August 23rd.
3. Accepted members will be notified by 5pm on Sunday, August 25th regarding on-campus interviews with the volunteering directors from Grady Memorial Hospital and Atlanta Medical Center.

Mercer University's College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences information session - Feb 18, 2013

Mercer University's College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences will be coming to visit us on Monday, February 18 at 7pm in the College of Computing Building (CCB), Room 52 to give us more information about Mercer's Pharmacy Program. For those of you interested in applying to pharmacy school soon, I encourage you to come out to this meeting to introduce yourself to one of the Directors of Admissions. There will also be current students who are in their Pharmacy School to answer all your burning questions. They will also be giving us hints on how to make Tech students into stronger applicants.

Please come join us, and bring your friends and anyone else that is interested in pharmacy. There will be light refreshments. :)

SAACS - Arizona Chemical & interviews - Feb 26, 2013

We are scheduled to meet with the SAACS group Tuesday, February 26 to talk about Arizona Chemical and opportunities within Science and Technology.  We will also be conducting interviews for individuals who are interested in our co-op program and / or internship program that afternoon.

American Society for Microbiology - meeting Feb. 7, 2013

The American Society for Microbiology at Georgia Tech is a group organized to promote the field of microbiology as both a study and a career by promoting interaction between students and faculty interested in microbiology, awareness of career opportunities in microbiology, intellectual curiosity related to the field, and participation in local events. Based on interest, some events for this semester include a tour of the CDC, a tour of Sweetwater Brewery, and several speakers and on-campus events. About Dr. Jeff SalyardsDr. Jeff Salyards is the program manager for Science & Technology at the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory (USAVIL). He holds a PhD in chemistry from Montana State University, a MFS from George Washington University, and has completed a Fellowship in Forensic Medicine from the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. A former director of the Defense Computer Forensic Laboratory, he has 21 years of combined experience in investigations, forensic consulting, and teaching.

About USACILThe U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory provides forensic laboratory services to Department of Defense investigative agencies and other federal agencies. USACIL is the only full service forensic laboratory in the DoD and trains special agents and investigators from the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines in the Special Agent Laboratory Training Course. The examiners and analysts testify in federal, military and state courts as well as multi-national courts. The laboratory provides state-of-the-art forensic examinations in the drug chemistry, trace evidence, serology/DNA, latent prints, forensic documents, digital evidence, firearms, and tool marks. 

Mercer MPH Degree Program now offered on Atlanta Campus

Mercer is adding a cohort of the Master of Public Health degree program to our Atlanta Campus. This is an expansion of the MPH program, which has been offered on our Macon Campus since 1998. This means we’ll have students in this program on both our Macon and Atlanta campuses. We will be offering evening classes, online classes, hybrid and distance learning options – a program ideal for students who want to continue working part-time or full-time while completing their degree in a reasonable timeframe. Our fully-accredited generalist degree program is designed to either build or enhance students’ broad understanding of preventative health and research within local and global communities. Our program has produced hundreds of graduates who are meeting the growing challenges of protecting the public’s health and preventing the spread of disease.

The Mercer MPH degree program is part of the new Mercer Health Science Center, which was approved in April by the University’s Board of Trustees and became operational in July. In addition to three current health sciences units – medicine, pharmacy, and nursing – the Mercer Health Science Center will launch a fourth academic unit on July 1, 2013. The new College of Health Professions will incorporate the master’s-level physician assistant and the doctoral-level physical therapy programs, which are currently housed within the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and the master’s-level public health program, which is currently offered in the School of Medicine.  The new college will also allow for the addition of future health sciences programs, such as occupational therapy, as well as the expansion of existing programs on multiple Mercer campuses.

We invite your students interested in a Master of Public Health degree to join us for an Information Session that will be held on our Atlanta Campus at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 14, 2012. The information session will provide insight into our MPH Program, including admissions criteria and process. Elliott Churchill retired from the Division of International Health within the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). From the 1970s to 2006 when she retired, Ms. Churchill served in a number of positions, including as Manager for the CDC Publication Office, which was responsible for issuing the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) and other publications.

Annual Resume Blitz Hosted by Career Services-Sept. 4th,5th & 7th!

Career Services will again host its Annual Resume Blitz September 4th, 5th and 7^th, where we invite industry experts and partners to critique student resumes prior to the Fall career fair (September 10th & 11th) and on-campus recruiting (September 11th -  November 16th).  

Based on feedback received from our participants, we have reduced the number of resume critique locations which will allow us to serve a larger number of students and accommodate a greater number of company representatives willing to support our students by volunteering their time and expertise. As a result, we are pleased to inform you that College of Sciences (CoS) students will be served in the Klaus Building Atrium on Wednesday, September 5, 2012, starting at 10:00 a.m. and ending at 3:00 p.m.

Come to the Ripple Effect’s (RE) general meeting on Tuesday, January 24th at 6:30 PM in the Student Center Piedmont Room (across from Burdell’s)! Food and refreshments will be provided! Members will have the opportunity to participate in events including: RE's annual flashmob, a banner that spells the word AIDS with 500 condoms, a Hoops for AIDS basketball tournament, a Date Auction, and an HIV Testing Center at Georgia Tech. In addition, students can take part in the “I am” Challenge, where committed participants will wear one t-shirt design for an entire year to raise money for orphans affected by HIV in the Dominican Republic!
