To current and prospective Pre-Health students alike: do you want exposure to the field of medicine but don't know how to get started? How about weekly shuttle rides to local hospitals or opportunities to meet with medical professionals?
GT Student Hospital Connections offers all that and more! A student-run Pre-Med organization, GT SHC sets up volunteering opportunities at Grady Memorial Hospital and Atlanta Medical Center. Interviews and orientations are conducted on campus and weekly transportation is provided for those who require it. Not only do we provide medical exposure, but also offer further opportunities to explore the field with guest speakers, chance to interact with other Pre-Health students, and more!
1. General orientation will take place in Klaus 1456 at 7:00pm on Thursday, August 22nd. The orientation is open to anyone who wants to learn about GT SHC. We strongly encourage attending the orientation to anyone who plans to volunteer through SHC for the first time.
2. Online membership application will be posted at the GT SHC site ( http://gtshc.weebly.com/) at 5pm on Wednesday, August 21st. Application is due by 11:59 p.m. August 23rd.
3. Accepted members will be notified by 5pm on Sunday, August 25th regarding on-campus interviews with the volunteering directors from Grady Memorial Hospital and Atlanta Medical Center.

Charged magazine - Sept. 19, 2012 meeting
Charged magazine, the online nucleus of creative science writing, will be holding our September meeting this Wednesday, September 19th at 6:00pm in room 102 of the Clough Commons building. This meeting is open to all.
This month's meeting will feature Dr. Pete Ludovice, host of WREK's Inside the Black Box (Wednesdays at noon, 91.1FM) and stand up comic extraordinaire (in addition to being an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering). Dr. Pete will be showing us how to use humor to engage the public.
We will also be unveiling our new editorial process and having a short creative writing workshop.

Jumpstart a Child's Future Join the Jumpstart Corps
Jumpstart is an excellent opportunity for Georgia Tech students to positively impact the lives of local Atlanta preschool students. Jumpstart is a national early education organization working toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed. Jumpstart Corps Members implement the Jumpstart curriculum on a weekly basis to help preschool students develop the language and literacy skills necessary for educational success. Corps Members develop strong positive relationships through reading, playing, and spending time with the preschool students. Corps Members also spend time weekly engaging in individual as well as team planning. Jumpstart Corps Members commit to serving 300 hours throughout the school year in this highly rewarding experience. Corps Members who qualify for Federal Work Study can work with Jumpstart as their job but you do not have to receive Federal Work Study to be a Corps Member. Corps Members are also eligible to receive an AmeriCorps education award after completing their term of service.

1. Volunteer applications are now posted on the GT SHC site (
http://gtshc.weebly.com/), but will not open online until August 20th.
Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. August 24th. Applications are
required for both new and returning members.
2. General orientation will be on August 30th at 7:00 p.m in Boggs B6.
3. Be sure to come early as there are limited spots available for
members needing transportation from us. Please line up outside the door
in order of your arrival. We will still accept those people who have
their own means of transportation to the hospitals.
4. Dues for Grady will be $25 (for those needing shuttle rides) and
$15 (for those providing their own transportation.) Dues for AMC will
be $50 (for those needing shuttle rides) and $30 (for those providing
their own transportation.)
5. Grady volunteering is a one-semester commitment, whereas AMC
volunteering is a two-semester commitment. Please take this into
consideration when you sign up.

BE A TUTOR!
Are you interested in giving back to the Atlanta community through fun
and dynamic tutoring programs? If so, please read on to learn about
what MOVE's tutoring programs have to offer you!
TEACH is offering two tutoring opportunities:
Place: Henry Grady High School
Subject: Math
Days: Mon-Thurs
Time: 3:30-4:30 pm
Duration: 1 hr.
Place: Create Your Dreams
Subjects: Calculus, chem, bio, physics, etc.
Days: Tues
Time: 5-7 pm
Duration: 2 hrs.

Children's Restoration Network (CRN) is a new program that focuses on
tutoring and mentoring homeless children living in shelters in the
Atlanta area. This program offers a lot of benefits for volunteers, such as:
1. Great experience: It's a wonderful opportunity for tutors/mentors to
interact with a wide age range of students. Volunteers build strong
relationships with their students and become a positive role model for
a child just by spending time with them.
2. Flexible schedule: Volunteers may choose the dates and times at
which they would like tutor, and volunteers are only required to
tutor/mentor once a week for 1.5 hours. In addition, volunteers can
choose a certain age range to tutor as well as whether they would
prefer one-on-one or small group tutoring.
3. Easy access: There are a few shelters within walking distance of
Tech, so transportation would not be required for volunteers who choose
those locations.
This program is a great way to give back to the community and to make a
huge difference in one child's life just by showing up once a week and
showing them that someone cares about their well-being!

Ripple Effect
Are you interested in leadership opportunities or working with a creative, international HIV Prevention organization? Come to the first general meeting of Ripple Effect on Monday, October 10th at 6 PM in the Student Center Theater (across from Pizza Hut)! Food and refreshments will be provided!
Ripple Effect is an organization based on the simple premise that our collective creativity and initiative is the first step in preventing the spread of HIV and AIDS. We hope that our grassroots campaign ripples across communities, borders, and generations to stop the transmission of HIV and AIDS. Our vision is to prevent the spread of HIV through empowering youth and community leaders to become peer educators within their communities.
Our concept is very simple: to spread HIV prevention awareness by taking the pledge to promote HIV activism among others (resembling the Pay It Forward system). If one person tells 5 other people about HIV transmission and prevention, and those 5 people tell 5 others then we can end what started as a ripple, with a ripple. Each person can take the pledge, the way he/she wants (whether it's through sponsoring an HIV Orphan or through changing his/her facebook status for a week). We hope by instilling this culture of activism, we can create a Ripple Effect. During the past year, we have done creative events to spread HIV awareness; these events included coordinating a Flash Mob and setting up a banner that spelled the word AIDS with 500 condoms.
We would love for you to come to our meeting to learn more about the organization. We are looking for dedicated and motivated individuals for leadership positions, as well as anyone who wants to make an impact in a fun, creative way.

CEISMIC KIDS club instructors needed -STEM
Georgia Tech's Center for Education Integrating, Science, Mathematics, and
Computing (CEISMC) is looking for knowledgeable instructors for the
2011-2012 K.I.D.S. Club meetings.
K.I.D.S. Club is a program in which hundreds of students in grades 2-5 visit
the Georgia Tech campus on Saturdays to participate in hands-on science,
technology, engineering or math (STEM) activities. This program is designed
to develop students' interest and passion for STEM learning.
If you are interested in sharing your expertise and love of STEM concepts,
CEISMC would love to have you participate in our program as an instructor.
Each year, dozens of GT faculty/students and K-12 teachers work with
K.I.D.S. Club members to share their fascinating field of interest and help
them better understand the world in which we live. As an instructor, you
will design your own 55-minute hands-on activity to share with club members.
The staff at CEISMC can help you shape your idea into a fun, interesting
experience for students, and we encourage you to visit our instructor

Instructors must commit to both Saturdays in the Fall or Spring season, or
you may instruct all 4 Saturdays if you would like. Instructors will
receive compensation for their time at K.I.D.S Club, $150 per Saturday
taught. The Fall sessions will take place on Saturday, November 12, 2011
and Saturday, December 3, 2011. Spring sessions are scheduled for Saturday,
March 3, 2012 and Saturday, March 12, 2012. Sessions run from 9am to 12pm.

Join the Computational Structural Biology VIP Team!
The VIP Team needs you if you are interested in any of the following:
• Thermodynamics and/or statistical mechanics
• Macromolecular structure and function
• Computer simulations and/or programming
• Classical mechanics
• Web page design and maintenance
Computer simulations on biological macromolecules are critical components of efforts at
understanding structure-function relationships, and for structure-based molecular
design. The Computational Structure Biology VIP Team (VP6) is developing web-based
tutorials to facilitate the understanding of basic principles of macromolecular simulations
and the applications of such simulations to problems in structural biology.
The tools developed by the VIP Team will be the core of a new text in Computational
Structural Biology. They will be used by students in molecular modeling courses, and by
individuals who are learning simulation methods through independent study.
Students register for one or two credit hours each semester in PHYS, BIOL, CS or ECE

Pittcon 2011
Pittcon (http://www.pittcon.org/) is the world's annual premier Conference and Exposition on laboratory science. It is organized by The Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy, a Pennsylvania not-for-profit educational corporation which is comprised of the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh (SSP) and the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh (SACP).
Pittcon attracts nearly 20,000 attendees from industry, academia and government from 90 countries worldwide and is managed by a committee of volunteers and a 10-person staff. Proceeds from Pittcon fund science education and outreach at all levels, kindergarten through adult.
This year Pittcon is being held in our backyard!!!

volunteers for Reception - InVenture Prize Competition
UROP will be hosting a reception for highly sought after high school students just before the InVenture Prize Competition. I am trying to get a few student and faculty representatives from all schools of COS to be there to demonstrate their research/innovations/hands-on technology/etc. I’d appreciate any help you can provide in getting COS to participate. I’m going to have the 6’ tables to use for display, but will try to accommodate whatever is needed.
The reception will be March 9th from (5-6:30) in the Student Center Ballroom. The president will welcome the students and their guests at 5:15pm and a little before 6:30 we will walk them over to the InVenture Prize Competition.

Tech Enriching Atlanta Community Highschools
TEACH (Tech Enriching Atlanta Community Highschools) is a tutorial committee under Georgia Tech's larger volunteering organization called MOVE (Mobilizing Opportunities for Volunteering Experience). We are continuing to tutor at Grady High School this semester. Spring is an especially important time since Grady students will be taking the EOCT and the GHSGT very soon. Grady would love to get all the help that they can receive! This is a wonderful chance for Tech students to make a difference in the Atlanta community, especially for the youth who are struggling in school. -You may tutor math, science, or both.
-If you need more information on what is specifically taught in each subject, please refer to the GA Department of Education website: www.doe.k12.ga.us. On the left, click on the links for the GHSGT and End Of Course Test. These provide past test questions and helpful guidelines for the basics on each subject. Also, during tutor sessions, the students should have their textbooks with them.
Times:
-Morning(math only): based on the bell schedule and may be subject to change because Grady follows a block schedule.
-Afternoon (math & science): 3:30pm-4:30pm from Monday to Thursday. Some students may stay longer.
-Saturday (science only): 9am-12pm
**You have the option to tutor more than one day, depending on the availability of transportation.
Requirements:
-Must tutor for at least an hour.
-Must sign in and out for each day they tutor.
Transportation:
For those who do not have a ride, transportation will be provided based on carpooling. Gazi and I will group tutors with those who have cars based on the time and number of seats. I can also provide rides on some days depending on the time.
Zipcars are also available. To have access to a Zipcar, the driver must register on the company's website. There's a $25 charge for each driver. The cost will be split amongst the people riding in the car. But don't worry! You will be reimbursed by us.

A Message from The Fouth R: Human Rights Education
My name is Swetha Krishnakumar, and I work with an organization known as the Fourth R: Human Rights Education.
Our organization is looking for reliable and passionate volunteers interested in education, human rights, and working with children. The Fourth R is a student-led program that promotes human rights by designing and delivering lessons to fifth grade students at local Atlanta schools, giving human rights presentations throughout Atlanta, and conducting workshops throughout the region to encourage and empower others to be human rights educators.
We are currently looking for 2 types of volunteers:
Volunteer Facilitators: people who would be interested in going into 5th grade classrooms and conducting weekly lessons
Campus Coordinators: people who would work on campus to raise awareness and funding to sustain our work with Atlanta 5th grade students
So if you are interested in working with children, learning more about the teaching profession, and promoting human rights, please join us for one of two INFORMATION SESSIONS on volunteer opportunities with our program. We will provide additional information about the Fourth R program as well as the application process.
